Gage-Downs corsetwaist

c.1885-1895. A black sateen corsetwaist made by Gage- Downs (often abbreviated to GD).
Corsetwaists were hailed as a healthier alternative to a traditional boned corset. They often had high busts with shoulder straps to support the breasts and back and could either have a traditional busk front closure or buttons. Corsetwaists relied more on cording than boning for figure support. They were popular amongst working class women as they gave a contemporary figure yet gave more freedom of movement and support than a regular corset. They were fairly inexpensive yet were well made.
This particular corset was most likely worn by poorer or working class woman as seen by the multiple repairs, darns and patches used to prolong it’s life.
This model has a pleated bust with an inner slot which accommodated different breast sizes and allowed for slight padding for figure enhancement. The shoulder straps pin on at the front, original period pins are still in place on this corsetwaist. It is fully corded with the exception of the front fastening busk and watchspring stays on both sides of the grommet holes for support. This corset originally had side steels but Gage- Downs gave wearers the option of removing these either temporarily for washing or permanently for comfort by adding a button- style hole at the top of each side steel’s bone casing. The curved busk is backed with an equally curved watchspring busk protector to prevent it from snapping in two from use.
Measurements: Bust 34″, Waist 22″, Hips 30″, Busk length 12″.

The most common question people ask me is “doesn’t that hurt?”

A. Not at all. i’m very careful with my corseting and it has become very comfortable to me.

Q. Do i have any problems with atrophy?
A. Nope. On occasion if i take the corset off to shower too quickly then it’ll hurt, but that’s because of the sudden decompression. If i don’t take it off all at once, then there’s no problem. 🙂

Q. Have i had any ribs removed?
A. No.

Q. Can i breathe?
A. No, i’m sitting here pressing keys haphazardly between my gasps for air. Sarcasm people.

Q. Can i hook you up with any of my corseting or fetishy friends?
A. No. Don’t ask.

Q. Where do i live?
A. If you didn’t see it in the stats up there…Michigan, USA.

Q. Where do i get my corsets?
A. C&S corsets.

Q. What size did my waist start at?
A. 22″.

Q. What size is my waist at now with the corset?
A. 14 – 14 1/2″.

Q. Without the corset?
A. My waist goes back out close to its normal size without the corset, probably around 20″ or so.

Q. How much do i wear the corset?
A. 23 hrs. a day, i only take it off to shower.

Q. How do you find someone into corsetry near you?
A. Try looking on the chat areas, or in goth clubs, a lot of people go there, or fetish clubs or areas.

Q. Why haven’t i answered your email?
A. i probably just haven’t gotten around to it yet. i’ll get back to you though, don’t worry.

Q. How old am i?
A. 24.

A. i’ve reached it, just not all the time yet.
Have you tried to get to 14″? It takes a while.

A. corseting, computers, music, etc etc.

Q. Am i on some sort of diet?
A. Nope.

Q. What do i eat?
A. Whatever i want, usually chili, pizza, and various candy.

Q. How much do i weigh?
A. About 105 – 110 lbs.

Q. How much can i eat with the corset on?
A. Usually i munch through the day instead of sitting and trying to eat a big meal all at once.

Q. How do people react when i go out?
A. Usually i don’t show off the corset when i go out, so i don’t get reactions when i don’t want them.
A lot of people are just stunned though when i decide to show it off.

Q. What do i usually wear?
A. Tee-shirt and jeans normally. Tube dresses when i want to show off the corset.

Q. Do many people come up to me and ask me about the corset?
A. Not as many as you might expect.

Q. Do i mind if you send me your picture or various other pictures
you’ve found concerning corsetry or heels?
A. Please don’t. You can ask in email if you feel it’s something i’ll really want to see, but i usually don’t open any attachments i get on emails.

Q. Do i mind if you email me?
A. Not at all, i welcome ideas, suggestions, questions, etc, as long as you aren’t overly pessimistic or obnoxious,
or anything like that. Try not to ask repetitive questions, if it’s listed here i expect you to know the answer.
I know however that it’s possible to miss one or two, so as long as it doesn’t get out of hand, i don’t mind.

A. August 1998.

A. Not really.
